The
House
We
live in a beautiful setting.
Our
house is the northernmost in a ring of faculty houses. At the center
is a parklike area which everyone has agreed will not be developed.
That's fine with us!
|
The picture on the right is taken from the middle of the park,
looking north to our house.
If
you want to see a map of the campus, click here.
This will open a new browser window for the Makumira website.
Our house is the one at the top of the map, above the "a"
in "Faculty Housing."
On the same map, the view at the right was taken from
the spot marked with the "s" in "Faculty housing."

The
house itself, cement block, with a corrugated asbestos roof, is
a comfortable three-bedroom home with Jim's office in the back.
(Don't worry about the asbestos roof. It's the insulation you don't
want.)
 |
Judy
uses a front bedroom for her office, and its window is on
the left edge of the picture.
The dining room is behind the covered porch, and the living
room is behind the two sets of windows to the right. Our Land
Rover peeks around the right edge of the house.

To
the right are our living room and dining room -- always open
for visitors! We hope you can come to visit us one day.
You
may note that each room has two lights (at the top of each
picture). Since TANESCO, the national power utility, often
proves rather unreliable in supplying the requisite 220 volts,
Jim has installed a backup 110 volt system to run the lights,
computers, etc. It uses a battery charger, an inverter, and
a mixture of switches and relays.
We call it BANESCO!

If
you want to see the floor plan of the whole house, you first have
to find the "webhouse" (that's us!) on the campus
map. It's sort of a secret, hidden for kids patient enough
to hunt. And it contains a spider! (Hint: it is clickable. Big
hint: the answer lies in the fourth paragraph, near the top of this
page!)

Alphabet
soup: MUCO, ACC, ANM and ELCT
Yes,
even Tanzania has its "alphabet soup" (MUCO, ELCT, LMC,
KCMC . . . the list goes on). The four big ones in our lives are
ELCT, MUCO, ACC and ANM. And Jim has done the websites for all four.
ELCT
is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Their national headquarters
is in Arusha, and you can click here for their website.
MUCO
stands, of course, for Makumira University College. That's where
we teach, and you can visit the MUCO website by clicking here.
ACC
stands for Arusha Community Church, an English language interdenominational
congregation, made up of folks from all over the world, including
non-Swahili parts of Africa. A lot of our fellow missionaries in
Arusha attend there, and, because of the "iffy" nature
of Tanzania's phone system, ACC has become sort of a communications
water hole (lots of networking!) as well as a worship center. Click
here
for their website, which also includes some nice maps of Arusha.
ANM
stands for Arusha Node Marie, our Internet Service Provider (also
known as "Habari"). ANM is sort of our northern Tanzania
AOL, and the "Marie" part of the name comes from former
missionary Marie Benson. Long story. You can go to their website
and find some nice pictures of Arusha.
You can also read about the Marie
Benson connection.
Hobbies,
car and dog
(can't live without 'em)

What
do we do in our spare time? Not much happens in the evenings in
this part of the world. But we enjoy reading and also playing and
listening to music. And then there are other things--our hobbies--such
as quilting for Judy and website design and other graphics projects
for Jim. (To go to Judy's "Quilting Chest," click here.)

And
where would we be without

our
faithful Land Rover and our trusty dog Chui?
The
former is rather rumpled, due to getting rolled with the whole family
in the car back in 1994. (No one seriously injured, for which we
thank God.) The latter, as you may or may not be able to see, is
rather overfed and enjoying the good life.

area?

Times website.
BUT
keep in mind . . .
things here are
seldom as
bad as
they
say
!
. . . though sometimes . . .
